The F-4J(UK) Phantom II was a variant of the famous F-4 Phantom II fighter aircraft, which was produced by McDonnell Douglas for the US Navy and Marine Corps. The F-4J(UK) was a modified version of the F-4J, which was supplied to the United Kingdom under the terms of the US Mutual Defense Assistance Program.
The F-4J(UK) was first delivered to the Royal Navy in the early 1970s and was operated by both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The aircraft was fitted with British avionics and other equipment, including a Ferranti-built radar and Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines.
The F-4J(UK) saw service during the Falklands War in 1982, where it was used by the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Air Force. The aircraft was primarily used for air defense and ground attack missions, and it was highly successful in both roles.
After the Falklands War, the F-4J(UK) was gradually replaced by the newer and more capable British Aerospace Sea Harrier and Panavia Tornado aircraft. The last F-4J(UK) was retired from Royal Navy service in 1991.
Despite its relatively short service life, the F-4J(UK) was a highly respected and effective aircraft. It was known for its ruggedness, versatility, and excellent performance in all weather conditions. The aircraft also holds the distinction of being the only Phantom variant to see combat with the Royal Navy.
